One day as my husband and I were leaving to run some errands, my husband asked his 15 year old son to wash the dishes in the sink. He said he would. When we got home I found the dishes in the sink had indeed been washed, however, the dirty dishes sitting beside the sink had not. When I asked my step-son about it, he said "I thought you just wanted the ones in the sink washed"! Moral of the story - explain exactly what you want done.
